Appreciation Day for Year 3 Science Facilitators


An 'Appreciation Day' was held for the Year 3 Science facilitators at the Main Hall in Curriculum Development Department, Ministry of Education this afternoon. On behalf of CDD, our Assistant Director, Mr Freddy Ho and Head of Science Unit, Haji Zulklifli Haji Md Yusuf expressed their sincerest thanks and appreciation toward the hard work and commitment shown by the Year 3 science facilitators during the implementation of the Year 3 science orientation workshop. Each facilitator was given a letter and certificate of appreciation followed by a complete set of the Year 3 science resource materials from CDD.

33rd BASE Annual General Meeting



The Head of Science Unit, CDD, Haji Zulkifli Haji Md Yusuf was recently invited as a guest speaker by the BASE president, Cikgu Makarimi bin Haji Awg. Kasim, for the 33rd Annual General Meeting held by The Brunei Association for Science Education (BASE) at the Lecture Theatre, Sixth Form Centre, Katok. The title of the presentation was 'The Importance of Having More Hands-On Activities in the Classroom to Raise Students Achievement in SPN21 Science'.

Also present was the guest of honour, Acting Senior Special Duties Officer Secondary Section, Ministry of Education (MoE), Mr Cheong Huat Joo as well as personnel from various departments in the MoE, primary and secondary teachers from the Brunei-Muara District.

The Year 5 Science Workshop was conducted by our science facilitators in Sekolah Rendah Muhammad Alam, Seria, over a period of 3 days from 16 to 18 March 2010.

The Year 5 Science Workshop was conducted by our science facilitators in Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hassan, Temburong, over a period of 3 days from 15 to 17 March 2010.

This is our last meeting with the Year 5 science facilitators. During the meeting, facilitators were reminded to plan their science workshop carefully and have a 'dry run' before the start of their workshop. A variety of resources including bags, notes and folders for the participants as well as materials needed for the workshop were provided by the Science Unit, Curriculum Development Department and Primary Section, Department of Schools. Group leaders of each centre (Centre 1 - 6) were also reminded to return the attendance form and evaluation questionnaires to CDD at the end of the workshop.

The Year 5 science workshop Phase I will be conducted at the following centres:

Centre 2 - Katok 'A' Primary School, Brunei Muara District

Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum Briefing 2010 [Temburong District]


This afternoon's Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum briefing conducted by the Science Unit, CDD was held at Sekolah Rendah Sultan Hassan Bangar, Temburong from 2.15 to 4.30 p.m. About fourteen Year 5 primary science teachers from both government and non-government schools in Temburong as well as six Year 5 facilitators attended the briefing. Cikgu Apsah Kurus from Department of Schools and an officer from Department of Schools Inspectorate were also present. The briefing was delivered by the Head of Science Unit, Haji Zulkifli bin Haji Md Yusuf on Year 5 science curriculum with accordance to SPN21. Heavy emphasis was placed on inquiry-based teaching and 'hands-on' activities. The briefing ended with a Question and Answer session where teachers were encouraged to give their comments or suggestions.

The Year 5 science teachers from Group B did their presentation on topics related to the Year 5 theme 'Variety and Classification' this afternoon. The first group presented the topic on 'Classification of Living Things' for Session 1 and the second group presented the topic on 'Variety and adaptation' for Session 2. The main objective of the sharing session is to encourage our science facilitators to share ideas and exchange resource materials as preparation for the coming Year 5 science workshop in their respective centres.

Yesterday afternoon, on 2 March 2010, the Year 5 science teachers from Group A presented some topics on Forces and Movement. The first group presented 'Force and Movement for Session 1' which talked about 'Introduction to Forces' whereas the second group presented 'Force and Movement for Session 2' which involved 'Types of Forces' and 'Friction'. The main objective of the sharing session is to encourage our science facilitators to share ideas and exchange resource materials as preparation for the coming Year 5 science workshop in their respective centres.

The Year 5 science teachers from Group C presented some topics on Light this afternoon at the Educational Resource and Library Section, 2nd floor, MOE. The first group presented 'Light for Session 1' which touched on 'Sources of Light, How Light Travels' and 'Shadow' whereas the second group presented 'Light for Session 2' which dealt with 'Reflection' and 'Splitting of Light'. The main objective of the sharing session is to encourage our science facilitators to share ideas and exchange resource materials as preparation for the coming Year 5 science workshop in their respective centres.

Today's Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum Briefing conducted by Science Unit, Curriculum Development Department (CDD) took place in Sekolah Rendah Panaga, Seria at 2.15 - 4.30 p.m. About more than 30 Year 5 primary science teachers and facilitators from Belait district (government and non-government schools) attended the briefing. Also present were the Acting Assistant Director of CDD, Mr Freddy Ho Mun Wai, the PPKD of Belait and officer from Department of Schools. The briefing was delivered by the Head of Science Unit, Haji Zulkifli bin Haji Md Yusuf on Year 5 science curriculum with accordance to SPN21. Heavy emphasis was placed on inquiry-based teaching and 'hands-on' activities. The briefing ended with a Question and Answer session where teachers were encouraged to give their comments or suggestions.

The 3rd meeting for Year 5 Science Facilitators was held this afternoon at the Educational Resource and Library Section, 2nd floor, MOE from 2.15-4.30 p.m. During the meeting, the CDD science officers shared some of the comments obtained from Year 1 and Year 4 science teachers regarding the Star Pub Science Textbook, Activity books and Teacher's Resource Package. There were also discussions on the tentative dates to have the group presentations and science workshop for each centre.

The following Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum briefing was held at Sekolah Rendah Keriam, Tutong on 18 February from 2.15 to 4.30 p.m. Year 5 facilitators and primary science teachers from both government and non-government schools in Tutong district were invited to attend the briefing. Our Head of Science Unit, Haji Zulkifli bin Haji Md Yusuf delivered the briefing on Year 5 science curriculum with accordance to SPN21. Teachers were constantly reminded to practise inquiry-based teaching and carry out 'hands-on' activities in their science lessons. The briefing ended with a Question and Answer session where teachers were encouraged to give their comments or suggestions.

The briefing on Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum was conducted by the Science Unit, Curriculum Development Department on 11 February at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School from 2.15 to 4.30 p.m. Participants invited to attend the briefing were the Year 5 facilitators and Year 5 primary science teachers from both government and non-government schools in Brunei Muara district. Also present were the Acting Assistant Director of CDD, Mr Freddy Ho Mun Wai, Cikgu Apsah Kurus, the PPKD of Brunei Muara district and other officers from Department of Schools.

Visiting Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School

To ensure that the coming Year 5 SPN21 Science Curriculum Briefing for Brunei-Muara teachers will run smoothly, the Science Unit and Publication Unit officers along with the Head of Training, Development and Research Unit, Dk Rosminah Pg Hj Alli, paid a visit to Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School this morning. The CDD officers were brought to the science laboratories and school auditorium by the teachers there. We sincerely thanked the principal, Cikgu Norbaini Hj Abdullah and teachers of this school for being helpful and supportive throughout.

Healthy Lifestyle Workshop for Year 2 Science Teachers


The Healthy Lifestyle Workshop for Primary Science Teachers was conducted by the Health Education officers over a period of 3 days, starting from 8th to 10th February 2010 at the Health Promotion Centre. The participants involved were mostly Year 2 teachers from both government and non-government primary schools. The main objective of the workshop is to enable Brunei teachers to become health promoters in their own right and to be able to confidently and comfortably get across to their pupils the health messages embedded in the curriculum.

The workshop included Health Galleria tour, talks on 'Healthy Diet', 'Dangers of Tobacco' and 'Physical Activity' and group discussions on ways to communicate health messages effectively to pupils in the classroom.

Copper Tooling Workshop [Day 4]


Today is the last day of the Copper Tooling Workshop held at Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan, Tanjung Bunut. The workshop ended with a sharing session in which the participants' finished products were shown on a slide presentation and participants were given the opportunity to share their views and make any comments or suggestions regarding the cooper tooling activity.

Copper Tooling Workshop [Day 3]



This is the 3rd day of the Copper Tooling Workshop where teachers were taught to make their very own wooden frames for the copper sheets. Participants were placed in groups (comprising 2-3 persons per group) and were closely supervised by a facilitator during the practical activity.

Copper Tooling Workshop [Day 1]


The Copper Tooling Workshop was held yesterday afternoon at Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan, Tanjung Bunut at 2.00 to 4.00 p.m. It was conducted by the Science Unit, CDD working collaboratively with Technology Studies Unit, CDD and facilitators in SM Sayyidina Hasan for teachers who are involved in Year 9 Specialised Applied Programme teaching Functional Science and Craft & Technology. This workshop will be held over a period of four days, starting from 21 January to 23, 25 and 26 January 2010. About 50 teachers attended the copper tooling workshop.

Year 3 Science Pilot Project Meeting [1]



The first Year 3 Science Pilot Project Meeting was held this afternoon at the Educational Resource and Library Section, 2nd floor, Block A, Ministry of Education. The teachers present were Year 3 science teachers from ten government primary schools and one non-government school. During the meeting, the teachers were given some resource materials and briefed on the Year 3 science syllabus, group presentations for the coming sessions, tentative dates for the sharing sessions and Year 3 science orientation workshop.

The first Year 5 Science Facilitators Meeting was held this afternoon at the Educational Resource and Library Section, 2nd floor, Block A, Ministry of Education from 2.15p.m onwards. About 40 primary science teachers from both government and non-government schools attended the meeting. These teachers are appointed as facilitators who will be conducting science workshops for Year 5 science teachers in their respective zones. The main agenda of the meeting is to brief the facilitators on the Year 5 science syllabus, schedule and logistics in conducting the workshop.
